Productos Avícolas
del Sur, Inc. (PAS) is an initiative of Puerto
Rican entrepreneur Fernando Echegaray Daleccio.
A professional engineer and developer of social-interest
housing and a shopping center located in Puerto
Rico’s South-Central area, Mr. Echegaray
Daleccio became interested in the poultry industry
when he came across the opportunity to acquire,
through a bidding process, the facilities formerly
operated under the name of Productores Avícolas
de Puerto Rico, Inc. (t/c/c PAPRI), located at
Barrio Aguirre in Salinas. Productos Avícolas
del Sur, Inc. (PAS) was incorporated in Puerto
Rico’s Department of State on February 4,
2003. A few months later, the Puerto Rico Department
of Agriculture classified PAS as a “Bona
Fide Farmer.”
Acquiring the Property
PAS’ current
facilities at Barrio Aguirre in Salinas were officially
acquired on June 28, 2003. At that moment we began
organizing the workers so as to initiate the fresh
local chicken processing process and come up with
a new brand name to market our products.
The Brand
The Pollos Canto Alegre™ name was the result
of a number of focus groups held throughout the
Island during the months of July, August and September
of 2003. Over 75 names were presented for consideration.
However, the main criteria was to choose a name
that would convey innovation, freshness and happiness.
At the same time, work was
underway towards creating the image of the chicken
that would appear on our labels. We wanted our
chicken to appear happy, cheerful, and melodious.
Finally, we came up with
the desired name and image. The name Pollos Canto
Alegre™ met all the criteria and fit perfectly
with the chicken icon designed by the artist.
In April 2004, the Puerto Rico Department of Economic
Development and Commerce’s Industrial Development
Division gave an award to Productos Avícolas
del Sur, Inc. and its Pollos Canto Alegre™
brand in the Corporate Identity category. The
company also received a special recognition in
the Rescued Business category.
The Logo
The logo shows a smiling,
singing chicken happily looking at us, peering through
a window. The window is the "O" within
the Canto Alegre phrase. Emanating from his "song"
we see musical notes and a stave behind it. The
colors used are red, mustard, orange and yellow.
Slogan
The phrase “frescura y calidad al natural”
(natural freshness and quality) was chosen as
our slogan to emphasize the fact that ours is
a fresh and perishable product, free of additives
and preservatives capable of altering its natural
freshness.
USDA Certification
After rehabilitating
certain facilities that were starting to deteriorate
due to lack of use and after extensive remodeling
we went through a rigorous evaluation and certification
process by the United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) that would allow us to operate a fresh local
chicken processing plant. The certification was
granted on December 30, 2003 and our plant was given
the number 31567. We were finally ready to begin
production of Pollos Canto Alegre! USDA
presence is always part of our processes. No food
processing plant can operate without the agency’s
representatives. USDA officials have a permanent
office within PAS’ processing plant.
Our Fresh Local Chicken
Production Begins!
PAS’ plant in Aguirre began producing fresh
Puerto Rican chicken on December 31, 2003. We
started out by processing 8,000 chickens a day
with the help of some 120 associates.
The New Brand Hits
the Marketplace
The new Pollos
Canto Alegre™ brand hit the market and was
available for Puerto Rico’s consumers on
January 2, 2004. The brand was received very well
and earned the support of local consumers. Since
then, our company has been growing and the brand
continues to take hold in the local market.

Our Poultry Farmers
Pollos Canto Alegre™
chickens are conscientiously raised and cared
for by Puerto Rican poultry farmers in modern
farms located in the South-Central region of the
Island. These farms comply with all the quality
control rules and procedures established by PAS’
Field Management Guide to Farm Management. This
Guide sets standards for biosafety, poultry management,
structures, equipment, pathways, among other things
for every farm.
Our Associates
PAS has over 500 Associates,
men and women who are mothers and fathers residing
in different municipalities within the Island’s
South-Central region. Around 50% of them reside
in the town of Salinas. They are happy to be part
of Pollos Canto Alegre™ and therefore put
in enthusiastic, top quality work. We hope to
bring the number of Associates to 500 within an
18-month period. |
